Finding Healing Among The Redwoods
Ancestral Healing with Nature
In moments of loss, nature offers a unique form of solace and healing. Among these natural healers, the majestic Redwoods stand out. Standing tall for thousands of years, these ancient trees provide a sacred space to process grief and connect with our ancestral roots in a truly unique way.
The Power of Redwoods
Redwoods are not just trees; they are living symbols of resilience and continuity. Their immense size and age, standing tall for thousands of years, remind us of the strength and wisdom passed down through generations. Redwoods can live to be 2,000 to 5,000 years old, allowing them to have survived and thrived through more than 14 generations of human blessings and trauma, a testament to the enduring nature of life.
The average person carries the gifts and traumas of 14 generations within them, connecting them to a long lineage of ancestors. When a Redwood dies, its decomposing material feeds neighboring trees through the root system. Over time, these neighboring trees send nutrients back, allowing a new tree to grow where the old one once stood. This cycle of life and death embodies the essence of grief and much for us as humans to learn from: with every end comes a new beginning.
Ancestral Healing Practices with Redwoods
Standing among Redwoods can have a calming effect. Feel the earth beneath your feet and the trees around you, drawing strength from their stability, much like the support from your ancestors.
Things to Do During Grounding:
Practice Deep Inhalations: Hold your breath for a few seconds, then slowly exhale through your mouth.
Be Barefoot: If possible, take off your shoes and let your feet connect directly with the earth.
Wear Grounding Colors: Dress in green, red, and/or brown, and bring some orange into your space (if you are working through processing Ancestral Grief) as you connect with the Redwoods.
Spend 5-7 Minutes in Deep Connection: Write down the feelings and thoughts that arise. Did you visualize anything?
Allow Emotional Release: If you begin to cry or express emotions, let the Redwoods hear you and let your tears fall onto the earth.
Reflect in Silence: After your time in connection and journaling, take a few moments in silence before returning to your hike or activities for the day.
Embrace the Journey
I like to think of Redwoods as the trees of Grief. Grief is the process of dealing with loss but it also brings new beginnings. By connecting with the Redwoods, you tap into ancient wisdom and strength. Let these majestic trees guide and support you through your grief, reminding you of your enduring connection to your ancestors and the resilience within you.
